A Fine Evening Of Travelling Through Time

Tonight, QUAD are showing The Time Traveler’s Wife. They contacted us lot at Time Travel Opportunists to put on a night of words to follow a literary adaptation (of which there are a few kicking about at the moment). Now, The Time Traveler’s Wife is looking like it might disappoint a bit, but it’s still about TIME innit, so we’re putting on a night all about time to follow the film that should either extend the enjoyment (if the film is as good as the book that it’s based on) or flood it out (if it’s not) with time themed wonders from the worlds of short films, fiction, and music.

Here’s what the evening is looking like:

WORDS:-
Time Travel Opportunists – me, Nathan Good and Emma Lannie, reading our original ficton.
Dr. Paul Hammond OBE – local actor, entrepreneur and savant shares his theories of time…
MOMO – We’ll be reading selections from Michael Ende’s classic throughout the evening.

FILM:-
‘On Time’ by Ted Chung – an incredible short film made in 24 hours at the 2008 Berlinale Talent Campus.
‘Back To The Future The Musical’ – one-man, one-theme tune. That’s all that needs saying.
‘Chronos’ by Ron Fricke – a visual journey through time (we’ll be playing this ambiently throughout the night)

MUSIC:-
Time themed musical journeys will be spun throughout this merry evening by DJ Emmett L. Brown. Great Scott!

All this is FREE as well. Seeing the film isn’t (it’s the usual price of about five or six quid), but the whole night afterwards is. We’ll start at 8:30pm, after the 6:10pm showing of The Time Traveler’s Wife. Join us. JOIN US.

Keeping The Present Inevitable

This poster is from a series by Amy Martin for the Federation for the Advancement of Time.
We definitely need to pay a visit to The Echo Park Time Travel Mart, and more specifically, here. They are doing good things.

A Really Bloomin' Nice Time

It's been over a week since it happened, but it's taken that long to catch up with everything after the TIME launch the Saturday before last. We had an amazing time. Really. We've all been obsessed with Time in our own ways for years, and came together to write and publish books and put on parties. So to have launched our second book and it be about Time made us chuffed to the rafters, and so did the launch night.

Jo Bell and Kevin Wallace. An incredible pairing. Inspiring performance, saucy n'all. This is them:

Paul Hammond. I think we mentioned somewhere that he was a genius and this new performance was proof. A lecture about Time that should be part of TED or at least the Christmas lectures on the tele. Hammond:

Jenn Ashworth was proper funny. We've since learned that Jenn wrote her stories about Sexy John that afternoon out of fear that if what she had wasn't about Time then there'd be some kind of wrath incurred. Derby's been begging for more of the Ashworth's literature and lies ever since:

Another exclusive debut on the night: The Month Of January, Doktor CocaColaMcDonalds' newest side-kick who will be appearing with him at Edinburgh Festival this year. Anyone up there should check out the new show as it's up there with last year's which had everyone in the little room at the Festival in tears of joy and ridiculousness. Here he is in all his monthly glory:

Massive thanks to Jo Lewis for coming down at about an hour's notice and blowing everyone away with the most timeless sounding acoustic music I've ever heard. Guitar and voice combine to sound like something that should come on a 78rpm vinyl and be played on a gramophone. Really. Honestly. That good.

We're always badgering on about this next guy. Michael Frearson, performance poet and champion of party rings and sexual melancholy. We'll be publishing his book over the next couple of weeks and rehearsing our new piece ready for the launch on the 26th July at Big Blue. Put it in your diaries. Free Party Rings no doubt. Here's Michael chucking one out:

Us three did a bit here and a bit there as well. We had the most incredible night and loved having everyone down again. That applies to everyone who performed and everyone who came. We hope to see you in a few weeks for Michael's book launch, as well as the following month when we release our third book as Time Travel Opportunists (which will also be the first one that we've opened up to everyone to contribute to. More on that very soon).

A Collection Of Stories About TIME

Here it is. Our second book. We hope you like it.

It's called 'TIME' and that's the theme. There are seven short stories over 32 pages.
There are also three letters written by the three of us in the moment before the clocks went forward an hour in March 2008.

It's printed on recycled paper and there are 200 copies. Each one is hand-bound, hand-stamped, and comes with an envelope containing a badge and a free minute. You can see all this in the picture. We should point out that the Westminster Movement is not included...

It costs three pounds from us in person, or four pounds in the post. You can get one by contacting us at books@timetravelopps.co.uk

TIME Book Launch (Update)

It's Wednesday today. That's good because it's nearly Saturday. We're really looking forward to Saturday. It's also bad. It's bad because it's nearly Saturday. We're really looking forward to Saturday but there's SO MUCH TO DO.

Here are a list of reasons why we're looking forward to Saturday:

THE MONTH OF JANUARY (a whole month in one night? Only a man acquainted with Doktor Coke & Ray:ManOfWords could pull it off)

PAUL HAMMOND (The only all-star quarterback from the East Midlands. Polymath, entrepreneur, legendary lover, all before the age of twenty-five. Is he going to give us Stephen Hawking's real deal?)

JENN ASHWORTH (our first not-from-round-ere guest. A prolific liar and extremely talented writer from Manchester, Jenn also writes the interactive library novel 'SH' with Emma TTO.)

STEPHEN M. ROE (Down from Leeds, Steve once haunted the streets of Derby before going up there to become part of Hooray! Say The Roses and now Held By Hands. He'll be sitting in front of a mic and behind a guitar, perhaps even with Harry on violin)

KEVIN WALLACE & JO BELL (They've only gone and written a special duet about TIME haven't they! I can't wait for this one. Although I think it might be filthy. Warn your mum!)

MICHAEL FREARSON
(Awesome, passionate, sentimental wittard and poet. If you don't know Frearson already you flipping well should. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll probably get a Party Ring thrown your way.)

TIME TRAVEL OPPORTUNISTS (that's right, it's us again. We'll be reading from our new book, and waxing lyrical about our main collective obsession - TIME.)

It's at Big Blue on Sadlergate in Derby. It's free. There'll be something free from us when you walk through the door (probably). We will try to make the evening very 'special'.

Reviews Of Our First Book, The One About Coffee

As you can see from the previous post, we're doing a performance to launch our second book - TIME. We are giddy to announce that we will be joined by Jenn Ashworth, who is right now celebrating her new book deal, will be our first non-Derby-based guest, and who will be performing a special piece about TIME!

A couple of months ago we launched our first book. It was called COFFEE. We sent Jenn a copy. Jenn wrote a review of it which pleased us a lot.

Chris Killen also wrote a review in a post about a few other books like ours.

Here are my favourite quotes from the reviews, the ones I'd like to see on a sticker on the front if we ever happen to put a sticker on the front (with quotes on):

"Top Banana! " - Jenn Ashworth

"It feels like you are going round to a house" - Chris Killen

TIME - Book Launch

Come along! See how much fun the last one was here.
